That's why when you pass an officer, he/she will get behind you for awhile before flashing the blues, to get a better angle in relation to your vehicle, and to therefore better their chances of an accurate speeding readout. Most radar guns have an approximate range of 6mph to 200mph...anything below or above this, the device cannot handle. Luckily for patrol, most of our vehicles will stay safely within this range. Police also sometimes have a continuous mode radar or laser gun, which will automatically take readings of moving targets without the patrol having to point and click every time.
Of course, as is true of most technology, there is still a window of opportunity for error. In this case, inaccuracy might arise mostly due to improper use. If you are the patrol, it is imperative to turn down the sensitivity of the radar in certain congested zones to avoid interference; make sure not to angle the radar gun unless in a stationary mode, and also be aware of general external interference, such as surrounding topography and other radar-transmitted devices. If you are the target of one of these devices, you should be aware of these influences, as a possible misdiagnosis of your speed.
So if you are a civilian, how can you combat radar and laser gun detection? Most would answer radar detectors. Radar detectors will pick up most radar guns' frequencies. What Is Radar And How Does It Affect Your Driving?

We have all heard of the term 'radar' but we rarely ask ourselves what radar really means? What are its uses? And what is the purpose of it?
Radar is a short form for 'radio detection and ranging'. It is a remote detection process which is used to trace and identify objects.
Radar can determine the distance, speed, direction of motion and shape of an object. The radar can identify objects even if it is out of sight. It can also work in all kinds of weather conditions which made this an essential tool for many industries.

Gamma rays and X rays have very short wavelengths. Noticeable light is a tiny slice of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths longer than X rays, but shorter than microwaves.
Radar systems use long-wavelength electromagnetic radiation in the microwave and radio ranges. Because of these long wavelengths, radio waves and microwaves are inclined to reflect better than shorter wavelength radiation, which tends to scatter or be absorbed before it gets to the target. Radio waves at the long-wavelength end of the spectrum will even reflect off of the atmosphere's ionosphere, a layer of electrically-charged particles in the earth's atmosphere.
Radar usually starts it system by sending out signals. The signal bounces off a target object and returns to the radar gun. This signal moves at a steady speed of light, so a computer unit can determine the time it takes for a signal to return.
If the target object is moving towards the radar gun, the frequency becomes higher due to a phenomenon called the Doppler shift. This means a moving police vehicle can exactly estimate the speed of a car approaching it. Police do not have to remain still by the side of the highway to detect speeders with radar guns.
Radar detectors are small devices used by many drivers to identify the presence of radar police units. These radar detectors will pick up the radar gun's signal before the driver speeds his/her vehicle past the police using it.

Why Everyone Should Own a Radar Detector



Radar detectors are very controversial these days. However, they are growing in popularity and more people own radar detectors today than ever before. Let's take a look at some reasons to own a radar detector.


I wish I could say I never speed, but that's just not the case. Actually, there are very few people who can say they never speed. This is such a face-paced life we live; always on the go and late getting there. So let's be as safe as possible. While most people think radar detectors are only for detecting speed traps, they can actually serve as a safety tool. While my mind is on a dozen other things (I know, I should be thinking about my driving...) my speed goes unchecked. Then, alas, my radar detector beeps and brings my attention back to the serious matter of my driving speed. Hopefully, it has alerted me soon enough to avoid a speeding ticket.


We've all seen the sneaky cops who hide behind bushes, just over the hill, around the curve at the bottom of the hill, or behind those bridge abutments. Don't you just grit your teeth when you see that! So why not have your own line of defense? Bear in mind there are a few states that do not allow the use of radar detectors, so be sure to check with your state before purchasing a radar detector. You can be sure the cost of a radar detector is far less than the cost of speeding tickets. Then there's the factor of increased insurance premiums - ouch! And that's a long-term expense!


Do you do a lot of driving for your job or career? Once again, you need to be in a dozen different places an hour ago, so you're driving like mad to get there. How many tickets can you get before you lose your job? How many tickets can you get before your insurance goes through the roof, once again putting your job at jeopardy? It just makes good sense to use a radar detector whenever you're on the road. If you can't help yourself from speeding, then at least use a tool to help protect your driving record and job security.


So, you've decided to purchase a radar detector - now what? There are some important considerations when purchasing a radar detector. For instance, band detection (which detects the range of police radar devises), distance to detection, ability to jam the signal, pricing, even where they are manufactured. So it's important to do your homework. Here are some tips to help you along:


1.  First of all, are they legal in your state - you could face large fines and even confiscation of your unit. The best way to find out is to contact your Secretary of State or local law enforcement office. If you live in Virginia or District of Columbia, don't bother - they're illegal in these areas. If you drive a commercial vehicle, don't bother - they're illegal for use in commercial vehicles, as well as on military bases and most Canadian provinces.


2.  How much do you want to spend? Remember the old saying, "You get what you pay for." That being said, the most expensive radar detector is not necessarily the best one for you. So give some thought to the features you are looking for, which leads us to tip # 3.


3.  There are a lot of radar detectors on the market with a lot of features, such as range, sensitivity, visual alerts, audio alerts, false alarm control, etc. Basically, there are three different types of radar detectors on the market: (A) corded, which are usually mounted on the windshield in the vicinity of your rear view mirror and offer the best range of detection; (B) cordless, which are more transportable and are easier to install, and (C) remote-mount radar detectors which are permanently mounted to your vehicle and are undetectable to thieves.


4.  So what features do you need? Of course, this goes back to your budget - the more features, the more it's going to cost you. At a minimum:


Your radar detector should have a wide band and can pick up the entire X, K, and Ka band. And by the way, you will want different indicators for each one of these bands including a separate flash or beep for each band. You want your radar detector to have at least 110 dB.  Do you like the appearance of the display - Is it clear and large enough to see it? You will most likely want a mute feature and volume control, as well.


Now that you know what features to look for, what type of radar detector do you want that fits in the budget you have to work with. A lot of manufacturers will have an online comparison of their different makes, models and features. This will help you narrow down the manufacturer, and then consider purchasing your item from a reputable website specializing in radar detectors. 


As I mentioned before, you usually get what you pay for, but if you keep with some of the more popular brands, such as Beltronics, Cobra, Escort, Rocky Mountain Radar, Valentine and Whistler, you should be just fine, as they usually offer a wide variety of product with a wide variety of features in all price ranges.


5.  Another consideration - are you going to install it yourself or have it professionally installed. Some radar detectors install as easily as plugging it into your cigarette lighter; others require direct wiring, etc. Most manufacturers offer installation guidelines and schematics for their products on their websites. If you aren't handy enough to install it yourself, most good electronics stores can point you to an auto electronics installation facility.


6. Probably the most important tip I can offer - BUYER BEWARE. As with any purchase, do your homework. Check the warranty and the small print. Can you return it if it's not the correct model for you. What if it's defective - can you return it for your money back or just an exchange or store credit? If you buy from an online store, be sure they are an authorized dealer; give them a call to be sure they're a real store; and, again, read the small print there as well.

What Radar Detector And How It Works

Are you tired of getting pulled over for speeding? If yes, you are ready for radar detector but you should know a little bit more about radar detection and how it works.  You have to know the latest technology police are using to catch speeders.
Radar detector is basically a device which allows you to find out when your car is being tracked by a radar gun, which is the device most police forces use to track other vehicles speed. The way a radar gun works is a radio signal is sent from the policeman's radar gun towards your vehicle, and the signals bounce off and back to the radar gun at a certain speed. If your car isn't moving at all, the radio signals come back at essentially with the same speed. If your car is moving they come back at a faster rate, and this can be measured. It is known as a Doppler effect in physics.

So what factors would be important when selecting a radar detector? First of all not all radars are built the same. Some are more accurate, some are more portable, and some are cordless for quick removal. The corded models are a bit bulkier, but also afford a bit more advance warning since they have a longer range than the cordless variety. Either way, when you are encountered by a radar gun that is tracking your car, you will either get an audible "beep" or a visual light signal that lets you know about it so you can take action and slow down. The problem is, often by the time you get the signal it may already be too late. There is another type of radar signal that most basic detectors aren't even able to read, and that is laser signals. These guns can’t be detected by standard radar detectors, so you may need to get what's called a "jammer" to fully protect yourself. These are illegal in most states though, so if you're caught using one it could lead to a hefty fine.
Another thing to consider is that even a standard radar detector won't smell out the police radar if their radar gun is not currently on active status. The newer guns are "instant on" devices, so you can be cruising down the highway and suddenly get a hit from your radar detector, only a few hundred feet from a standing police officer with a gun in his hand. So even if you have a radar detector it's best to keep your speed down and not rely on it too heavily. It may save you from getting ticket or two but if you disregard speeding laws sooner or later you may maybe caught.
If despite of that you still want to buy radar detector be prepared that the number of choices out there is humongous. Luckily, there are only a few worth buying and we will try to help you to decide which one is the best radar detector for you.

The first question is "How much do you want to spend?"  If number lower than $150 doesn’t buy anything. If your answer between $150 and $200, your best option is to buy a refurbished Escort Passport 8500 from Escort Radar's eBay store. If you have $300 to spend, you should get either an Escort Passport 8500 X50 or a Beltronics RX65. All the radar detectors previously mentioned will serve you well, but if you want extreme performance, you need to bump your budget up to $400 to $500.

The top devices on the market today are the Valentine One, the Escort Redline, the Beltronics STi Driver and the Escort Passport 9500ix. While all excellent performers, each of the have their own pros and cons.
The Escort Redline is currently the undisputed king of sensitivity and will alert further than all other devices in most situations. The Valentine One is the top performer in the area of reaction time and will alert faster than most other devices on the market. The Escort Passport 9500ix is the best radar detector for filtering out false alerts as it has a unique GPS feature that will automatically filter out false signals based on frequency and location.

To help you determine which is right for you, we'll take a look at each of these features separately so you can decide which is the most important to you. Sensitivity should be high on everyone's list as the more sensitive radar detectors will alert the furthest from the police officer radar gun. The more warning time you have, the more time you'll have to correct your speed and slow down. The Escort Redline and the Valentine One are very close most of the time with the Redline slightly edging out the Valentine in most situations. The 9500ix lags behind both, but it will provide enough sensitivity for most situations.

Reactivity is a radar detector's ability to alert to radar sources as quickly as possible. This feature is becoming more and more important as police officers are able to engage their radar guns, get a speed, and disengage them faster than ever. A lot of radar detectors won't even alert at all in a situation like this. Out of the top 4 units listed above, only the Valentine One has great reaction time to super fast radar sources. The Valentine One is known to detect short bursts of radar much more often than both the Redline and the 9500ix.

Selectivity is the radar detector's ability to filter out false alerts. Only the Escort Passport 9500ix has the ability to automatically learn and suppress false alarms by location and radar frequency. If you pass by the same false alert three times, the 9500ix will learn the location and you will not be alerted to that radar source in the future. It's important to note that only that radar source is suppressed, if a new radar source appears in the same location that will cause an alert on this unit. Neither the Redline nor the Valentine have this feature.

Bottom line is, if you are looking for raw detection distance, go with the Escort Redline, if you are looking for the best reaction time, go with the Valentine One, but if you are looking for a radar detector that doesn't alert unnecessarily, go with the Escort Passport 9500ix.

How Leagl It Is To Use Radar Detectors

A good number of the people with cars in the United States have their own radar detectors. Their reason is that they feel that the speed limit at present is very low. Most of the American people are not satisfied with moderate speed while driving. They want to be the fastest driver on the road as well as get to the places they’re going in record time they want to be always in the race.
The use of a radar detector in a passenger vehicle is legal in all states with the exception of Virginia, Washington DC. It also prohibited on military bases. Radar detectors are illegal in all commercial vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds.  In Canada, the only three provinces that allow their use are Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.  Many overseas countries also ban their use, such as Portugal, Finland and Spain. 

In areas that radar detectors are illegal, law enforcement use a device called the Spectre that is able to detect the use of radar detector in your car or truck. Laser Jammers and Radar Jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC. If you decide to use a laser jammer in one of the states that they are outlawed, consider getting the Blinder M-20 or M-40 or the Lidakek LE-30. The Blinder and the Lidatek are the only laser jammers made today that give minimal "error codes" to the police laser guns.
In an effort to combat speeding in Virginia, law enforcement agencies employ the use of radar guns to measure how fast vehicles are traveling on the roads. In other states, motorists have utilized radar detectors in response to this tactic. But you should know that radar detectors in Virginia are illegal. 

The state of Virginia has banned the use of radar detectors in all civilian vehicles. People who violate this law are subject to a fine. However, the law does not call for demerit points to be issued for possession of a radar detector, and unless the device is being used as evidence, police officers are not permitted to confiscate it. In addition, the law allows police to cite you even if the radar detector is not operational. This prevents would-be violators from disconnecting their radar detectors after being pulled over but before a police officer is able to see it. However, if there is no power source for the device in the vehicle, and if the device is "not readily accessible" by the driver or any passengers, then police officers are not permitted to cite you for violating this law. Under Virginia law, if you are convicted of DUI in the General District Court, you have a right to appeal and get a new trial in the Circuit Court.

In all honesty, radar detectors are not very practical in terms of preventing speeding tickets. In most cases, police officers only turn on their radar guns when they see a vehicle that they think is speeding. So by the time this device picks up the desired radio frequency and you hit the brakes, the police officer has already clocked your speed.
